Cold Tree Publishing Launches Moorsgate Press in Response to the Proliferation of Subpar Self-Publishing

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) August 27, 2008 -- Moorsgate Press launches this month with one main goal in mind: to combat the influx of unscrupulous "self-publishing" companies that have flooded the publishing industry.

The original Cold Tree Press started in 2001 as a self-publishing company at a time when the new technology allowed unpublished authors the opportunity to bring well-written manuscripts to the marketplace at a fraction of the cost of previous alternatives. Since its inception, Cold Tree's mission has been the same, "?providing a resource for writers who endeavor to achieve the highest quality?with a partner whose foundation is based on honesty, integrity and professionalism." That mission never wavered, but as the years followed more and more "self-publishing" companies emerged, flooding the industry with hollow promises and less-than-stellar execution. An excellent alternative to traditional publishing soon became no better than the "vanity presses" of the past. Though there are still a small number of excellent companies that do care about authors and their work, most have opted for sales associates and the "if you have the money, we'll publish it" mentality.

Though the work published through Cold Tree Press continued to gain momentum and accolades throughout the industry, the inundation of subpar books in the marketplace made it increasingly difficult to separate from the pack. So in March of this year, Cold Tree Press ceased to be a self-publishing company.

"Despite the quality of work we produced--and no matter how hard we worked for our authors--we were fighting an uphill battle," says Peter Honsberger, CEO of Cold Tree Publishing. He says he's appalled at the way many companies take advantage of novice authors. "Most new authors are unaware of the realities of the publishing industry, which is difficult even under the best circumstances. They are being fed unrealistic statistics and expectations about their works. In making this change, we needed to look at the way we were structured to continue to provide the best chance of success for our authors."

The restructured Cold Tree Publishing has been divided into three imprints: Hooded Friar, a traditional high-end literary fiction imprint; Cold Tree, now a traditional trade paperback imprint; and Moorsgate, a partnership press.

Moorsgate is dedicated to offering opportunities to authors who otherwise would be overlooked by traditional houses. In the partnership press model, the author and the publishing house share the financial risk of bringing a book to publication. Once a work is accepted, the author pays a fee, but, in turn, the publishing house matches and exceeds that investment through editing, marketing, inventory maintenance and distribution. Therefore, both parties are equally invested in the success of the work.

"If we agree to publish a writer, that means we share the risk and are committed to the book's success," Honsberger says.

The criteria for publication through Moorsgate are stringent, and manuscripts must follow strict submission guidelines. All submissions must have been professionally edited according to Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition, at least once. Submissions also must include a brief synopsis of the manuscript, a cover letter containing the word count, information about the manuscript's target audience, marketing ideas, and a summary of the author's writing background. Once submitted, a manuscript must pass both an internal review and one by independent readers to be accepted.

In making this change, Honsberger says he hopes the industry, publishers, distributors and retailers will see Cold Tree Publishing's commitment to authors and to bringing excellent, well-written works to the reading public.
